Paid traffic stops the day the budget stops. Organic traffic keeps arriving, which is why SEO is the only acquisition channel that becomes cheaper the longer you run it — provided the foundations are right.
Layer 1: technical foundations
Before a single article is published, make sure search engines can crawl, render and index what you already have.
- Every important page returns 200 and is reachable by a normal HTML link.
- One canonical version of the site (https, single hostname) with correct canonical tags.
- XML sitemap listing canonical URLs, referenced from robots.txt.
- No accidental noindex on pages you want ranked.
- Server-rendered or statically generated content — not text that appears only after JavaScript runs.
- Core Web Vitals within thresholds, especially on mobile.
Layer 2: keyword mapping by intent
Do not target every keyword on the homepage. Assign one primary keyword and a small set of secondary terms to each page, matched to the searcher's intent.
| Intent | Example query | Right page type |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial | web development company | Service page |
| Comparison | shopify vs custom store | Comparison article |
| Informational | how much does an app cost | Guide article |
| Navigational | brand name login | Product or account page |
One page per intent prevents cannibalisation, where two of your own URLs compete and neither ranks properly.
Layer 3: content that answers completely
- 1Answer the query in the first two sentences.
- 2Cover the follow-up questions a real buyer would ask next.
- 3Use headings that mirror how people phrase the problem.
- 4Include specifics — numbers, steps, trade-offs — not generic filler.
- 5Update rather than republish; freshness on a strong URL beats a new thin one.
Layer 4: internal linking
Internal links are the cheapest ranking lever most sites ignore. Every article should link to the service it supports, and every service page should link to its related services and supporting articles. For example, a guide about apps should link to mobile app development, and an eCommerce comparison should link to Shopify development.
- Use descriptive anchor text, not 'click here'.
- Link from strong pages to the pages you want to rank.
- Avoid orphan pages — anything not linked internally is effectively hidden.
Layer 5: structured data
Schema does not directly boost rankings, but it makes results eligible for richer presentation. Implement Organization, WebSite, BreadcrumbList, Article and FAQPage — and only mark up content that is genuinely visible on the page.
Local and international considerations
If you serve a city, a Google Business Profile plus consistent name, address and phone data matters more than another blog post. If you serve international clients, avoid duplicating near-identical city pages — build one strong service page and support it with genuinely different content.
What to measure
- Impressions and clicks by query in Search Console — the earliest signal of progress.
- Indexed page count versus submitted.
- Organic conversions, not just sessions.
- Core Web Vitals trend on mobile.
- Position movement for your mapped primary keywords.
Technical fixes can move within weeks. Competitive content-driven growth takes months. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is selling something else.
